Fiona studied a Bachelor of Speech Pathology at Charles Sturt University on Wiradjuri Country. Fiona has been a Speech Pathologist since 2019.
Before moving to Larrakia Country and joining the Patches team in 2020, Fiona worked as a Speech Pathologist in the Education Department in South Australia on Boandik Country. In this role, she supported 18 schools and preschools by increasing teachers’ understanding of the impact communication difficulties can have on learning, participation and wellbeing for their students.
Fiona has worked with a variety of Neurodiverse people across the life span including Autistic children and adults, those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Specific Learning Disorder with impairment in reading (dyslexia), and Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Fiona provides services to the Darwin region, in addition to fortnightly outreach trips to Katherine. Fiona is passionate about providing all people with access to a communication system that allows them to feel respected, understood and connected to their community.
Fiona works through a client and family centered approach, where the relationship and connection between the client and their important people is highlighted as the most powerful therapeutic tool. In therapy with Fiona, the client and their family can expect to have a hands on role in the decision making, goal setting and therapy activities. In Fiona’s spare time she enjoys taking in the stunning Darwin Sunsets, exploring the Top End, teaching her Border Collie new tricks, and binge watching the latest Netflix releases.
