What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a complex neuro-developmental disorder, affecting approximately 1 in every 20 Australians. ADHD affects the brain’s executive functioning, the set of cognitive processes and mental skills which control a person’s ability to self-regulate and control thoughts, actions and emotions. Children with ADHD often experience difficulties with inattention, impulsivity, overactivity, emotional regulation, social navigation and sleep.

There are three main types of ADHD, which differ according to the frequency and intensity of the symptoms exhibited. These include:

  • Primarily Hyperactive and Impulsive ADHD
  • Primarily Inattentive ADHD (formerly called ADD)
  • Combined Inattentive, Hyperactive and Impulsive ADHD

Assessing for ADHD
