Understanding ADHD

A neurodevelopmental condition affecting how the brain self-regulates

Evidence-based information from our clinical team to help you understand ADHD, its presentations, and how assessment can support diagnosis and care planning.

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects the brain's executive functioning, the set of cognitive processes responsible for self-regulation, attention, planning, working memory, emotional control, and impulse management.

ADHD presents differently across individuals and across the lifespan. Symptoms typically emerge in childhood but often persist into adolescence and adulthood, where they can affect education, employment, relationships, and mental health if unsupported.

Clinical Presentations

The three recognised types of ADHD

01

Predominantly Inattentive

Difficulty sustaining focus, following detailed instructions, organising tasks, and completing work. Previously referred to as ADD.

02

Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive

Restlessness, difficulty sitting still, talking excessively, interrupting others, and acting without considering consequences.

03

Combined Presentation

Features of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive types are present, and is the most commonly diagnosed presentation.

ADHD symptoms in children typically fall into three categories: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Common signs include:

  • Difficulty focusing on tasks, often making careless mistakes or losing focus easily
  • Frequent fidgeting or inability to sit still
  • Impulsivity, such as difficulty waiting for turns or interrupting others
  • Difficulty following through on instructions or completing tasks
  • Frequent forgetfulness, disorganisation, or losing belongings
  • Difficulty maintaining attention in conversations, lectures, or reading materials
  • Difficulty regulating emotions or handling frustration
