What is FASD?

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. It can affect physical health, cognitive development, behaviour, and adaptive functioning. The effects vary greatly between individuals but are often lifelong and require tailored support strategies.

FASD is more common than many people realise and may impact memory, attention, impulse control, learning, emotional regulation, and social skills. It can also be accompanied by a range of physical or sensory differences.

SIGNS OF FASD IN CHILDREN

Children with FASD may display a range of challenges across cognitive, behavioural, and physical domains. Common signs include:

  • Difficulty with memory, learning, and retaining new information
  • Trouble understanding cause and effect
  • Poor impulse control or risk-taking behaviours
  • Difficulty with emotional regulation and social skills
  • Delays in language development or communication challenges
  • Hyperactivity or restlessness
  • Physical differences such as facial features associated with FASD (in some cases)
  • Difficulties in school, including challenges with attention and processing speed

Because FASD symptoms often overlap with other neurodevelopmental conditions, a thorough, multidisciplinary assessment is essential for accurate diagnosis.

SIGNS OF FASD IN ADULTS

FASD can continue to affect individuals throughout their lifetime. In adults, signs may include:

  • Ongoing struggles with memory, attention, or organisation
  • Difficulty with time management, planning, and decision-making
  • Challenges with employment or independent living
  • Impulsivity or difficulty regulating emotions
  • Social difficulties and misunderstanding social cues
  • Increased vulnerability in legal, financial, or social systems

Many adults with FASD are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, making access to assessment and personalised supports vital.
