What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects how individuals interact with others and the world around them. It is estimated that 1 in 70 Australians are affected by autism. The term ‘spectrum’ reflects the wide range of ways autism can present, with each person having a unique combination of strengths and challenges. This highlights the importance of tailored assessments and support for those with autism, ensuring their needs are met at every stage of life.

SIGNS OF ASD IN CHILDREN

The symptoms of ASD generally fall into two main categories: challenges with social
communication and interaction, and restricted or repetitive behaviours and interests.
Common signs of autism in children include:

• Difficulty understanding body language, social cues, and limited social exchanges
• Delayed speech, repetitive words, or unusual speech patterns
• Avoidance of eye contact
• Difficulty making friends, preferring solitude
• Adherence to strict routines, distress at changes
• Repetitive physical behaviours such as hand-flapping, rocking, or spinning
• A narrow range of interests, sometimes involving obsessive focus on specific toys or
topics
• Sensory sensitivities to sound, taste, touch, smell, or sight, which may cause distress
in noisy
environments or aversion to certain foods

ASD can often be identified as early as 18-24 months, with some signs appearing
even earlier.
