Neurodiversity recognises that there is no single “normal” way to think, learn, communicate or experience the world. This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week (16th-22nd March) and here at Patches we are celebrating different minds.

What is Neurodiversity?
Every mind works differently. Some people think visually, some process information through patterns, while others approach problems with unique creativity and focus. These differences are part of what makes human thinking so diverse and valuable.
Neurodiversity is the naturally occurring diversity in human brains. Variations in neurological functioning, including conditions such as autism and ADHD, are natural and valuable parts of this diversity.
Neurodivergence is an umbrella term to describe the range of neurological and behaviour traits that differ from what is considered ‘neurotypical’. This includes specific conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, DCD (dyspraxia), dyscalculia, and Tourette syndrome. Approximately 15-20% of the population has a neurological difference.
People who are neurodivergent can face different struggles, but they also possess unique strengths and abilities. Often, the ‘challenges’ neurodivergent people face are not caused by the differences themselves, but by the environments and systems they are placed in.
Having a more balanced understanding of individuals by recognising both their strengths and the challenges they may experience is an important step towards inclusivity. Recognising and embracing neurodiversity can help make a positive difference for not just those who are neurodivergent, but everyone. Schools, universities and organisations can all benefit from the perspectives and strengths that diverse thinkers bring.

Neurodiversity Celebration Week (March 16th-22nd)
This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week. Founded by Siena Castellon in 2018, Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a global initiative that challenges common stereotypes and misunderstandings about neurological differences.
This event encourages a shift in how neurodivergent individuals are understood and supported. Also, it inspires schools, universities, workplaces, and communities around the world to highlight the strengths and talents of neurodivergent people while seeking more inclusive environments that celebrate diversity and empower everyone.
Celebrating neurodiversity is not only about raising awareness, but also about creating inclusive environments where people can thrive.

Celebrating Neurodiversity in Workplaces and Schools
Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a great opportunity to create more inclusive environments where different ways of thinking are recognised and valued.
Here are a few actions schools and workplaces may take:
- Start conversations about neurodiversity to raise awareness and understanding
- Encourage inclusive communication and respect for different perspectives
- Recognise and celebrate individual strengths and talents
- Provide flexible ways of learning, working, and sharing ideas
- Create supportive environments where everyone feels valued
Neurodiversity reminds us that there is no single “right” way to think, learn or experience the world. Our differences in thinking, creativity and problem-solving are what make communities stronger and more innovative.
By understanding and celebrating neurodiversity, this week and every week, we can create inclusive environments that helps everyone have the opportunity to contribute their strengths and feel valued.
